What’s Waiting For You in New Pokemon Snap?

If you're jumping into New Pokemon Snap, here's what to expect in this fun new vision of the classic photography game.

Pokemon Snap is a beloved spinoff of the mainstream Pokemon series. Instead of catching the lovable Pocket Monsters, you simply take photos of them. Ever since the original game debuted on Nintendo 64 back in 1999, fans have been waiting patiently for another slice of what made the first adventure so much fun in the first place.

Now, New Pokemon Snap is here, and it's brought with it a slew of features that both borrow from and improve upon the original in a variety of ways. If you've been waiting for a reason to jump back into the wonderful world of Pokemon Snap, this is a great way to do it. Here's what to expect from the sequel.

Lots of new Pokemon

The original Pokemon Snap, great as it was, only contained 63 monsters. They were all selected from Kanto, the first region trainers were able to visit in the old Pokemon Red and Blue games that first hit Game Boy back during the height of the Pokemon pandemonium. New Pokemon Snap will feature over 200 monsters, pulled from every generation of the games, including the Galar region of Pokemon Sword and Shield. That means your work is cut out for you as a photographer.

Glowing Pokemon

In the first game, one of the strangest things you could have happen was a Pokemon transforming or the appearance of a mythical creature like Mew. Now, in New Pokemon Snap, you're researching something called the Illumina phenomenon that's been seen across the Lental region. This makes Pokemon glow and grow larger. That means you'll be seeing some pretty crazy stuff, potentially, which further sets this entry apart.

Day and nighttime courses

There are several different courses to explore in New Pokemon Snap. You'll be able to nudge different types of Pokemon out of bushes, coax them into clearings for better pictures, and more all in either day or night areas. With that in mind, there may be species that you've never seen before since some Pokemon are nocturnal. This way you get to see things from a whole new perspective. It also adds longevity to the game, so you can go back and play again in either day or night conditions.

Photo grading

You're not just going to get away with taking any photo. Surely you didn't think this was Pokemon Candid Camera, right? You've got to be an auteur in a Pokemon Snap game, which means you'll be graded on how well you handle taking pictures of each of the monsters you find. From there, you'll earn research points just like old times, depending on the type of shot you score. Bonus points, always, for creativity! And make sure you get the monster in the frame.

Re-Snap edits

If you take a picture you really like, great! Hold onto it and edit it so you like it even more. The new Re-Snap editing feature lets you change things up to make the picture you just snapped feel more like your own. It's a fun way to make sure your picture is 100% printer ready before you transfer your image over and print out your favorite new Poke-photos. Who doesn't have a photo editing tool these days, if they're photographing wildlife, anyway?
