Unlocking the Golem ability

You’ll need to reach level 25 to unlock the Golem summon skill. In addition to reaching level 25, you will need to complete a short Class quest. It will be immediately marked in your journal; we recommend heading over to it right away. It's fairly quick and mostly involves slaying skeletons that spawn nearby (kill the ones marked as red dots on your minimap).

The quest is in the Fractured Peaks area and will hardly take you any time to finish.

Remember, you must do the required quest first. Then the skill will be added to your skill book.

The first thing you’ll need to do is open your skill menu default S. Drag the Golem summon skill onto an available slot on your action bar. Once Golem is assigned a slot, your Golem is automatically summoned, and doesn't need you to call upon it.

Should your Golem die, it will respawn automatically after 20 seconds. Who knew necromancy can be so convenient?

Types of Golems

Golem TypeAbilities
Bone GolemA tanky Golem that excels at soaking up damage and shielding the Necromancer from harm. Good if you're lacking defensives. Taunts enemies for you.
Blood GolemA vampiric Golem that leeches health from enemies, healing both itself and the Necromancer. This Golem is ideal for players who want extra sustain in longer battles or tough boss fights.
Iron GolemA high-damage Golem with massive offensive capabilities. It offers more unique Crowd Control for the Necromancer in the form of Stuns and Pulls.

Customizing your Golem

You have the ability to customize a few areas of Golem’s mechanics to fit your playstyle. Upgrading your Golem comes mainly from Passive skills in the Tree. Look for nodes such as Golem Mastery (increased max life and damage) and anything else that buffs minions (Hellbent Commander if you have Skeletons too, Death's Defense, and so on). Kalan's Edict is the go-to Key Passive for an all-out minion build.

Use the Book of the Dead (by default Shift+C) to further customize your Golem. Each Golem can have two different passive effects, and it can also be Sacrificied. It's not all that uncommon to Sacrifice it, because you get a powerful Passive bonus from it, and this action frees up that slot on your skill bar. Generally, all-out Minion builds keep the Skeletons and Golem active, while many other builds opt to Sacrifice them.

Choose the right options for your build and compliment what you need — or go all-in on the damage that you want — with the Book of the Dead.

Tips for using Golem in combat

Golem Sacrifice Diablo 4

  1. Gauge your defensive needs — If you're frequently dying, switch to a more defensive Golem, like Bone, and have it Taunt enemies for you. This extra form of Crowd Control might be just what you need to survive.
  2. Try out different Golem types — You may be lacking a Stun or a Pull, depending on your build. Try out the Iron or Blood Golems to see if their skill types aid you. Otherwise, consider Sacrificing them with the right type of buff to vastly increase your damage output — either via Attack Speed (Bone), Maximum Life increase, (Blood) or increased Critical Strike Damage (Iron).
  3. Go all in or not at all — If you're using a Golem actively, it's usually best to put points into its passives to get the most of it. Consider going with Skeletons and aim for Legendary Aspects that buff minions and the Ring of Mendeln Unique ring, which drops from The Beast in Ice.
