Duriel is considered one of the most challenging bosses in Diablo 4, and for good reason. But as soon as you're able to kill him, he's one of the best sources of drops in the game, especially if you're looking for a particular Unique.

Despite this arduous battle, defeating Duriel rewards you with rare Mythic Unique items. In this guide, we’ll show you how to summon Duriel for battle so you can collect these items for yourself.

Step-by-Step Guide to Summon Duriel

1. Collect Shards of Agony and Mucus Slicked Eggs

In order to summon Duriel, you’ll need: 2 shards of agony and 2 mucus slicked eggs.

How to Get Shards of Agony

These are obtained by defeating Grigoire, the Galvanic Saint located in World Tier 4.

To summon Grigoire, you need 5 Living Steel, which can be collected from Tortured Gifts of Living Steel during Helltide events or other activities like Tree of Whispers.

  • Go to the Hall of the Penitent in the Dry Steppes.

  • Place 5 Living Steel at the altar

Grigoire is a challenging boss that deals significant lightning damage, so equip Lightning Resistance gear and use Lightning Resistance Elixirs.

Each time you defeat Grigoire, there is a chance to receive a Shard of Agony, so you may need to summon and defeat him twice to receive the 2 Shards of Agony required to summon Duriel.

Pro tip: Only the player who summons Grigoire will receive a Shard of Agony upon defeating him.

How to Get Mucus-Slicked Eggs

Mucus Slicked Eggs are acquired by defeating the Echo of Varshan, but before you can summon him, you need to acquire Malignant Hearts.

Malignant Hearts can be obtained by completing Grim Favors from the Tree of Whispers on World Tier Four or by defeating Grotesque Debtors found in Legion Events or near World Bosses.

Once you have them, travel to the Writhing Mire dungeon located in the northeastern area of Hawezar (right by the Tree of Whispers). Inside this dungeon, locate the altar to summon Varshan. Defeat Varshan to acquire Mucus-Slicked Eggs.

2. Summon Duriel for Battle

Now that you have obtained the necessary materials, it’s time to place them at the altar and summon Duriel for battle.

  • Travel to the Gaping Crevasse dungeon in Kehjistan.

  • Inside the dungeon, locate the Pestilent Altar at the end.

  • Interact with the altar and place the required materials: 2 Shards of Agony and 2 Mucus-Slicked Eggs.

  • This will summon Duriel for battle.

3. Prepare for Battle

Duriel is one of the most challenging bosses in Diablo 4, so you should be well-prepared before you summon him for battle. Nearly all of his attacks inflict deadly poison damage, meaning you will need to manage your health throughout the fight.

The difficulty is intentional, as Duriel is designed to be a high-stakes battle that rewards you with rare Mythic Unique items.

Equip high Poison Resistance gear and use a Poison Elixir to increase resistance further. Duriel disappears underground and resurfaces with maggots that shoot poisonous projectiles.

Be ready for Duriel’s poison-based attacks, including poison pools, burrowing summons, and high-damage projectiles.

If you die during the fight, you can re-enter without needing to resummon Duriel; however, he will heal back to full health.

If you're not killing him efficiently (or at all), enlist the help of other players or come back later.
