Power Armor is one of the most iconic parts of Fallout 4, offering enhanced defense, strength, and radiation resistance. But while climbing into the suit is easy, getting out of it isn’t always so obvious, especially if you’re returning to the game or jumping in for the first time.
Whether you're stuck in your suit or just can't remember the button combo, here’s exactly how to exit Power Armor on every platform, and what to do if the game refuses to cooperate.
Hold the E key (default interaction key).
You must be standing still, not mid-combat or interacting with anything, for it to work.
Press and hold the A button.
The same rules apply: make sure you’re not moving or using an object.
Press and hold the X button.
Works the same as Xbox—hold it down while standing still.
Tip: A quick tap won’t work. You need to hold the button until your character begins the exit animation.
If holding the button doesn’t do anything, here are a few common causes and solutions:
Power Armor can’t be exited if there’s not enough room for the animation. Move to flat ground or open space and try again.
Sometimes it’s just a glitch. When in doubt, a quick reload often fixes input or animation bugs.
Check your keybindings or controller settings. If you've customized controls, the default button might not work anymore.
Still stuck? You can force your character out of Power Armor with a console command:
player.unequipitem 00021B3B
Use console commands with caution – They can break quests or cause other issues if misused.
While we’re here, here are a few quick tips for managing Power Armor more effectively:
Remove the Fusion Core when you’re done using it. This prevents NPCs from hopping in and taking your suit for a joyride.
Use Power Armor Stations to repair and upgrade parts, especially after a tough fight.
Store Power Armor Safely inside a building or behind locked doors in your settlement to keep it secure.

No, you must be standing still. Exiting Power Armor requires a brief animation that can’t be interrupted.
Remove the Fusion Core before leaving your suit, and store your Power Armor in a secure location to prevent NPCs from stealing it.
