Though Valve wasn't the first to do it, their 2013 Arms Dealer update changed the landscape of gaming significantly. By integrating a community market with the game, both Valve made good revenue as well as those creating and selling various skins and models. This spread to their other games such as Dota 2. Every item could be placed on the marketplace, except for keys.
Valve wasn't sure what kind of weapon skins would people be interested in. They were quite tame at first. However, opening cases proved to be more and more hype, with lots of streamers and personalities showing off their high-roller moments.
In 2014, Operation Breakout released, and along six maps, three new weapon collections released. Among them, The Cobblestone Collection came out, featuring none other than the now fabled AWP | Dragon Lore.
Its detail and design immediately caught the eye, especially in comparison to the tamer skins from around that time. "It was like a lamborghini," said TeaWithMilkAndSugar, one of the content creators interviewed in the theScore esports video above.
Hype kills with the sniper rifle only fueled the popularity of the skin.
The drop was only available for a limited time, so that only increased the price. It was theoretically possible to get a Souvenir version until 2018, but the boxes were really expensive (about $500) and the chances were quite slim. Dragon Lore became incredibly scarce, thus increasing its rarity and scarcity.
