Ball X Pit has made waves as the hot new indie game; it combines the gameplay of something like Breakout with roguelike mechanics.
Combine various balls with tons of different effects to maximize your damage. Inflict a variety of status effects like freezing, poison, burn, and bleed. There are tons of unique ball combinations to discover as well!
When you have two balls at Level 3, you can either Evolve or combine them. Evolving unlocks whole new abilities, while combining simply mixes their features. So if you want to burn enemies with a laser beam, all you need is a Burn ball and a Laser (horizontal or vetical).
However, Evolutions tend to be much more potent, and what's more, you can further combine your Evolutions!

I made an "immortal" build by using Vampiric Sword; though you lose health for shooting balls, you don't if they are staying behind enemy lines, therefore you keep getting healed. Plus with the Bandage you release baby balls every time you're healed.
If you're going for a "debuff" build, think about how to widely apply it. Freeze works great with Wind or Lightning, turning it into a Blizzard that has a secure chance of freezing.
However, depending on your build (high-Strength characters especially), you might want something hard-hitting, like with Iron and Dark. Since Dark hits only 1 target and disappears, you can give it AOE with something like Lightning.
Further in the game, tankier and tankier opponents will show up (many will be "stacked" on each other) so you need to find the right balance of AOE and high damage.
This Equipment sounds great at first: your balls pass through enemies! This can do massive damage to a column. However, when they hit the back wall, they will stop passing through, and the balls can get trapped in the back for quite a while. Meanwhile, the enemies closest to you keep advancing, and advancing...
You'll probably experience that in some runs, but it doesn't mean that the Ethereal Cloak is bad. Just make sure you have enough damage or a plan. For example, it can work great with Upturned Hatchet (balls do more damage after reaching the back wall).
His power is more like a "setting." The Cogitator in Ball x Pit randomizes your build choices. You will never be able to make any selections when leveling up or when finding a Fusion Reactor. For what it's worth, it does seem to generally pick an Evolution when it's available.
But yes, this is basically a "let my playthrough be completely random," so just let go of any preconceptions and lose yourself in the Pit.
The Empty Nester does not use any baby balls, instead he shoots out multiple copies of special balls. Which ball you might ask?
Well, it depends on which ones are available to shoot. But he basically multiplies the one that he's holding right now, and will shoot it out multiple times when available. So if your "main" or first ball is stuck somewhere else, the next ball that he will catch will be shot multiple items.
If you want better control over this power, disable auto-firing.
The short answer, at least early game, is "don't worry about it."
Until you expand more, just worry about placing buildings and finishing them off. After unlocking my third or fourth plot of land, I remade my settlement a bit. Arrange the houses and other buildings that don't have active effects in a corner. You won't need to touch them.
In another corner, set up harvesting/farming zones.
The most obvious problem might be that you aren't quite ready for the latest stage you unlocked. Sometimes, the difficulty jumps are considerable.
But there might be more to it than just grinding a previous level. The most important check you need to do is in your settlement: have you upgraded your buildings as much as you could?
Press TAB on PC to easily see which buildings are upgradable in Ball x Pit.
After planting quite a few new buildings, I didn't realize that I could get many of them to level 2 and 3. Particularly, the skill scaling buildings. Upgrade everything you can to the max, and all your characters will get extra stats and scaling.
Also consider the fact that some of your characters might be a lot weaker than others; fresh characters starting at level 1 will just have a harder time initially than others.
They're all different, but the biggest tips I have are:
1. Take your time (there's no limit as far as I know).
2. You can slow down the game speed just for the boss fight. Help yourself dodge those tight bullet hell segments. Also, remember to bait the boss attacks in a certain direction.
