Elden Ring offers one of the most flexible character progression systems in modern gaming, and respeccing is your golden ticket to reinvention.

To unlock the ability to respec, you first need to defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon. Here’s how to do it.
The Academy is located in Liurnia of the Lakes, north of Limgrave.
To enter, you’ll need the Academy Glintstone Key, which can be found on a corpse near the dragon guarding the western side of the Academy.
Fight your way through enemies and puzzles in the Academy until you reach Rennala’s boss room.
Phase 1: Destroy the glowing students around her to break her shield and deal damage.
Phase 2: A more traditional boss fight where she uses magic attacks. After defeating her, she becomes a non-hostile NPC in her boss arena.
To respec, you’ll need a Larval Tear, which is a rare consumable item. Each time you respec, one Larval Tear is consumed.
Here are some places where you can find Larval Tears early in the game:
Southwest of Agheel Lake South (Limgrave): Near the Village of the Albinaurics, there’s an enemy disguised as a wandering noble. When defeated, it transforms into a bear and drops a Larval Tear.
Liurnia of the Lakes: Found near Caria Manor or dropped by enemies disguised as other creatures.
Caelid and Nokron: Later in the game, you’ll find more Larval Tears in these regions.

Once you’ve defeated Rennala and obtained at least one Larval Tear:
Return to her boss room at Raya Lucaria Grand Library (you can fast-travel there after defeating her).
Speak to Rennala and select the “Rebirth” option from her dialogue menu.
When you select “Rebirth,” you’ll enter the respeccing menu:
Your stats will reset to their base values according to your starting class.
You’ll be able to reallocate all your earned attribute points however you like.
You cannot lower any stat below its starting value for your class.
Once satisfied with your new stat allocation, confirm your choices.
The Larval Tear will only be consumed after you confirm your new stats.
If you back out without confirming, no Larval Tear will be used.
No, you cannot respec for free in Elden Ring. Respeccing requires a Larval Tear, a rare and finite resource in the game. Each time you wish to reset your stats and reallocate attribute points, you must exchange one Larval Tear with Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, at the Raya Lucaria Grand Library after defeating her.
There are no in-game methods to bypass this requirement, but PC players can use mods like “Easy Respec,” which allows respeccing without Larval Tears at any Site of Grace. However, using such mods requires playing offline to avoid bans.
In Elden Ring, there is no legitimate in-game method to acquire infinite Larval Tears, as they are finite items by design. However, there are workarounds and mods that players can use to bypass this limitation:
Mods like the “Infinite Larval Tears” mod on Nexus Mods allow you to purchase Larval Tears infinitely from specific merchants, such as the Twin Maiden Husks, for a set price (3,000 runes each).
To install these mods:
Replace the `regulation.bin` file in your game directory with the modded version.
Use tools like ModEngine2 or play offline to avoid corruption or bans.
Note: These mods are only available for PC and require you to play offline.
Some players have discovered glitches that allow for infinite respeccing without consuming Larval Tears:
Navigate to `%AppData%\EldenRing` and copy your save folder.
Use a Larval Tear to respec, and if you’re unsatisfied or want to try another build, restore the copied save file.
This method is safe but requires manual file management.
You can respec in Elden Ring up to 18 times per playthrough, as there are only 18 Larval Tears available in the game world. Each Larval Tear allows you to reset your stats by using the “Rebirth” option with Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, at the Raya Lucaria Grand Library.
However, there is technically no hard limit if you use a save-scumming strategy. By saving your game before using a Larval Tear and reloading that save after experimenting with a build, you can effectively respec as many times as you want without consuming additional Larval Tears. This approach is particularly useful for testing builds or preparing for specific challenges.
Since there are only 18 Larval Tears available per playthrough reserve them for major changes in your build rather than small adjustments.
Focus on endgame or New Game Plus (NG+) scenarios where you have more attribute points to redistribute and can experiment with powerful builds.
Use Larval Tears to explore different playstyles (melee, magic, or hybrid builds) without grinding for levels.
Test whether a weapon, spell or playstyle suits you before fully committing to it. For example, if you’re unsure about switching to a magic-focused build, respec and try it out.
If you’re preparing for expansions like the “Shadow of the Erdtree” DLC, consider saving Larval Tears to adapt your build for new challenges and mechanics introduced in the content.
