SteelSeries Acquires World’s Biggest Competitive Gaming Site ClanBase
The press release below is an April 1st prank. Even though our partnership with ClanBase is more than healthy, we have to inform you that the ClanBase Steel name no longer exists and that GGL continues the ownership of ClanBase.
SteelSeries, a leading manufacturer of innovative professional gaming gear, today announced the acquisition of ClanBase, the world’s most active online and gaming community site. The acquisition has been completed successfully, with ClanBase changing name to ClanBase Steel effective immediately and adapting to the color scheme and logo of SteelSeries.
It might not come as a surprise to many of ClanBase Steel’s users after the close collaboration that ClanBase Steel and Steelseries has had for many seasons, as well as Steelseries dedication to the gaming scene. What for many has been seen as something only waiting to happen – SteelSeries has finally moved beyond peripherals and are now invading the actual computer and the online tournament community in a much more engaged way. The first step was seen with their SteelSecurity software and their action today really speaks for “going all in” in the virtual space.
More than 25.000 gamers play a match through ClanBase Steel every day. The matches are organized in established leagues and ladders, spanning a multitude of games and gaming platforms. In total more than 2 million gamers across Europe have registered accounts on ClanBase Steel.
All employees and administrators of ClanBase Steel, will continue their daily work as usual after the merger. ClanBase is build by the administrators and users and SteelSeries will want to continue with the very skilled crew that ClanBase Steel has.
“It has been an extremely interesting process collaborating with SteelSeries about this entire set up – SteelSeries who connects their products to the PC, and us connecting with the users and connecting the users to each other. Many will say we come from different ends of the spectrum in terms of what we do – however we have along the way discovered many interesting ways we can do things in the future – merging our know how from our various fields.” says Mads Ehrhardt, Managing Director of ClanBase Steel. “With SteelSeries as the new owner it will be interesting to see what we can plug ClanBase Steel into in the future. We of course hope that the aquisition does not come with any “wires attached”.”
“We see this is an exciting new business opportunity, which allows us to grow our brand, expanding competitive gaming as a genre and working even closer with the community” says Kim Rom, VP of Marketing for SteelSeries. “We have had some very interesting business meetings in Amsterdam over the past weeks, we definitely look forward to continuing these.”
No financial sums were disclosed about the transaction.
ClanBase Steel Media is working on a video interview with Kim Rom, VP of Marketing for SteelSeries and Mads Ehrhardt, Managing Director of ClanBase Steel to be featured in the near future on www.clanbase.com about the future plans for this new constellation.
